The answer is both.
Those of us who are doers and “go get ‘em” types will depend on ourselves and our spiritual performance and will possibly even judge those who trust in God.
Those of us who are more inclined to trust and pray a lot can always fall into the pitfall of becoming fatalistic using the excuse of waiting on God.
Though spiritual growth is active, it is also passive as it is something that is done to us. Ultimately, it is God alone who graciously works in us to transform us into true disciples and witnesses for Christ.
The answer is both.
